CAMRA comments on the impact of the World Cup on pubs

Responding to reports that pubs may face serious shortfall in visitors during the World Cup compared to the Euros last year, CAMRA National Chairman Nik Antona said:

“Major sporting events provide a fantastic opportunity for communities to convene down at their local, supporting these vital businesses. It’s concerning to hear reports that footfall at pubs is expected to be significantly lower this year compared to the Euros in 2021, which provided a real lifeline for pubs up and down the country.

“Pubs are a vital part of the social fabric of our communities but are under immense pressure this winter. Last week’s Budget offered little comfort for licensees struggling to cope with rising costs and customers tightening their belts, with no extra help announced to help keep pub-going affordable.

“CAMRA will continue to campaign for a fair deal for the nation’s pubs, clubs, breweries and cider producers and I personally urge football fans across the UK to support their local whilst supporting their team down at the pub during the tournament.”
