CAMRA is a not-for-profit consumer group with over 162,000 members that has been operating since 1971. The organisation campaigns on behalf of beer, cider and perry drinkers and is also committed to the preservation of pubs, which it sees as integral parts of every community. ‘The Campaign’ is volunteer led with the CAMRA Staff working from an office in St Albans and providing professional support to the organisation’s campaigning and commercial operations, as well as providing a range of services to members.
We are independent and our policies and campaigning objectives are set by our membership.
CAMRA’s decision-making process is wholly independent of any commercial companies or other organisations.
We are not-for-profit and all proceeds are put back into achieving our campaigning objectives.
We are consumers. We have no commercial interests in pub or brewery ownership or management.
We are non-party political.

About you
The role of Membership Marketing Officer is key to delivering the Campaign for Real Ale’s strategic membership growth objectives. You will provide marketing expertise through strategic marketing, marketing planning and delivery of marketing initiatives to deliver our objectives.
Working with both our professional staff and volunteers you will, working with the Head of Membership, plan, implement and manage membership campaigns and provide regular reports to evidence the impact of marketing activities.
We are looking for a talented marketer to join the Campaign for Real Ale as our new Membership Marketing Officer, driving our member recruitment and retention strategy. The role is a great mix of creative, operational delivery and analysis and would suit someone looking to utilise their existing experience to promote, support and develop the membership proposition for one of the UK’s most recognised campaigning organisations.
Job Purpose
To be responsible for delivering membership recruitment targets, as well as delivering marketing initiatives to support membership retention.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop a strategic approach, in conjunction with the Head of Membership, to how CAMRA recruits and retains members.
- Develop, maintain, and deliver a marketing plan, in conjunction with the Head of Membership, with associated budget aligned to the required delivery of membership recruitment and retention targets.
- Design and implement marketing initiatives for the delivery of recruitment and retention targets:
- Coordinate marketing delivery across relevant touchpoint areas including, and not limited to,:
- Local area marketing
- Festivals
- Digital marketing
- Direct marketing
- Advertising
- Affiliate marketing
- PR
- Review the customer journey ensuring there is consistency, and opportunities recruit members are seized.
- Lead on the development of the membership proposition by identifying potential benefit partners.
- Be responsible for monitoring membership performance – report and act accordingly.
- Proactively develop partnerships with appropriate third-party organisations that will bring direct recruitment benefit.
- Provide support for CAMRA’s Marketing and Communication Working Group.
- Manage the Membership Marketing budget.
- Some UK travel and evening and weekend meetings. Time in Lieu offered.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Experience of working in a Marketing role
- Demonstrable experience of ownership and responsibility for budgets and the delivery of revenue targets
- Creative and Drive to be able to see ideas through concept to completion
- Experience of SEO, PPC, CPM management and optimisation.
- Experience of developing marketing strategies/tactics and an understanding of data protection best practice
- Good Computing Skills
- Experience of writing, managing, and reporting on marketing plans.
- Experience of updating and creating website content using WordPress or similar software
- Ability to function effectively within a small team and to remain calm under pressure
- External agency management (including research, design, and print)
- Capable of taking on a varied degree of tasks and responsibility and of managing own workload efficiently
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Ability to work flexibly some evenings and weekends required. Lieu time offered
Preferred Criteria
- Educated to Degree level with Marketing qualifications.
- Understanding of the not-for-profit environment.
- Experience of data analysis.
- Knowledge of the beer and pubs sector.
- Experience with the marketing department of a paid-membership organisation.
- Experience of working with volunteers.
