Historic Interest

Castle Brewery was established in the 1830s. Operated by Gatehouse & Yates from 1877 to 1887 when it merged with the Castle Brewery in Ardwick, Manchester to be Yates’s Castle Brewery Limited. The Birkenhead offices appear to have been at 18 Market Place South (now Market Place) and the brewery at 76 Hamilton Street. Continued brewing in Birkenhead until 1934 and the brewery was later demolished. The business including the pubs was taken over by John Smiths Brewery in 1961.
