Historic Interest
A pub since at least 1850 when it was listed in Bagshaw’s Directory. An Argyle Brewery pub transferred to Birkenhead Brewery in 1866. The old photo is of the pub in the 1890s. It appears there was serious WW2 war damage resulting in the loss of the second floor. In 1960, the licensee was Walter (Wally) Thom, the former British and European welterweight boxing champion. Described in 1980 as a well kept old town pub with lounge and tiny plain bar serving Whitbread Special Cask Bitter.
