Hit or Miss, Gravesend

The Hit or Miss is first recorded in 1805 at The Undershore, Northfleet. Three of the photographs (thanks to www.dover-kent,com for sharing) depict this original building, which appears to have been part of the tied estate of Gravesend Brewers Walker's, passing to Charrington's in 1904 with their acquisition of Walker's. For reasons that have become lost in the mists of time this building was demolished and its replacement, built in 1929, was sited a few hundred yards to the east at the address above.

Whether Charrington's continued to operate the new pub is uncertain. It appers to have become a free house by the 1980s and CAMRA members will have fond memories of it as a real ale mecca around that time. Sadly this did not last and last orders were called permanently in 1987. The building lay unused for a few years but was eventually demolished and Gravesend's residents now benefit from the site having been turned into a car park...
