Community pub

Located on the corner of Park Road and Palace Road, this is a friendly and comfortable local community Victorian pub in a quiet residential area but only a short walk from the centre of Bromley.

Inside, the décor is plain and conservative. The short and staggered bar counter serves a double aspect room with large windows that bring in plenty of light, which leads off to one side with a couple of fireplaces. The dark grey patterned carpet is complemented by light grey panelled walls with mix of artwork and framed old photos of the locality, whilst chandeliers hang down from white painted ceiling. The overall atmosphere is cosy and intimate, especially in the evenings when there are lantern candles whilst the fireplaces are a definite draw during the cold winter months. There is an assortment of tables and seating, whilst a TV screen sits in one corner.

The large conservatory at the rear can be reserved for private functions and is cheerfully decked out. In good weather, one side can be removed to provide access to the garden, which itself is a mix of enclosed patio and lawn with assorted tables and seating, and tends to be popular during the summer months. In addition, there is seating out front on the raised enclosed area along with a bookcase serving as a community library.

In late 2018, the pub was revitalised following the negotiation of a long-term lease giving independence from any beer tie. The cask ale selection is limited to one or two, with one usually from the Bexley brewery.

Hot snacks are available throughout the day until 9pm.

The pub has regular music nights and range of events. Check the website and social media links for more details.

Historic Interest

Built in 1859, this opened on 8th June of that year (much to the alarm of the Temperance movement) in what was then called the New Town part of Bromley, later to be called New Bromley. At that time, this was on the edge of countryside with picturesque views, before the housing development began in the 1860s. This development was triggered by the opening of the nearby railway in 1858 at what is now Bromley South station. Park Road was once part of an old footpath between Bromley and Chislehurst and was a popular walking route for ladies and gentlemen taking the country air.
