Traditional pub.

After being closed a number of years, the pub reopened under new management in November 2016 and now regularly offers a range of cask ales, many of which were previously rarely seen in Bromley, including beers from Fyne, Arbor, Kirkstall, Marble, Siren and Tiny Rebel. With up to 7 cask ales on handpump, the selection normally includes at least one stout or porter as well as showcasing beers from smaller breweries from all over the country. In addition, up to 16 craft keg taps and imported draft beers are also available along with one corner of the pub devoted to a wide selection of bottles and cans for either takeaway or drinking on the premises. Keg beers can include DEYA, Orbit, Vault City, Verdant, Cloudwater and Northern Monk but these can change on a frequent basis.

Rebuilt in 1898 in the Arts & Crafts "Old English" style, this Grade II listed pub has probably one of the most imposing exteriors of any pub in the area, including an enormous pub sign projecting over the pavement. Large arched windows with etched glass complement the wooden frontage on the ground floor, divided into a central arch with end arches either side complete with mosaic floor tiling. Inside the pub has been completely refurbished as more open plan around a U-shaped bar with wooden flooring and cream walls adorned with tin-plated beer signs and beer pump clips. The lighting is subdued with fairy lights over the ornate woodwork. Seating consists of a wide variety of benches, chairs and high stools around wooden tables.

At the back, there is a well tended patio garden with plenty of assorted seating, popular in warmer weather. At dusk, this is illuminated with lots of fairy lights.

No meals are provided but customers are allowed to consume food brought in from local takeaways. The owners also operate The Stormbird and the Hermits Cave in Camberwell.

Local CAMRA branch Pub of the Year for 2018, 2019 and 2020/2021, runner-up in 2022 and 2023 and joint runner-up in 2024.

Historic Interest

Rebuilt in 1898 as a hotel in the Arts & Crafts "Old English" Vernacular Revival style, complete with balcony, turret and decoration. Designed by Berney and Sons for the Nalder & Collyer brewery in Croydon. This replaced an inn with the same name built in the late 18th C. Grade II listed in 2001 by Historic England (entry 1389494), which states: "Built as a hotel, now public house and two shops. Designed in 1898, architects Berney and Son, in Vernacular Revival style. Built of brick but applied eclectic timber framing with patterns of ogees and circles and pebbledashed infill to front. Tiled roof with three tapering brick chimney stacks. Three storeys; six windows. Mainly mullioned and transomed casements with leaded lights to the upper parts. No 227 has two gables to the second floor with a relief Star and Garter motif and St George and the Dragon. Two six-light oriels but left side oriel merges into an attached octagonal turret with pendant and octagonal wooden cupola with round-headed leaded light windows, console brackets and ogee-shaped dome with metal finial. Cast iron brackets support elaborate inn sign. First floor has three French windows with round-headed tops with keystones based on Sparrowe's House at Ipswich and ends have narrow round-headed leaded light casements. Wooden balustrading with ball finials supported on stone brackets. Ground floor has pub front with three arched entrances with granite keystones, four granite pilasters and granite plinth. Central arch has three round-headed wooden doors with leaded lights above. End arches have recessed half-glazed doors with etched glass and deep firelded panels below. End walls have panels filled with etched glass and mosaic floors with name of the hotel. The interior retains original lincrusta ceiling, an internal wooden partition, Two partly fluted and partly plain cast iron columns, an elaborately carved island bar and a cast iron fireplace."
