This Pub is Permanently Closed
Originally named the Lamprey Hotel (after an eel.. and a local delicacy), the premises last traded as Liquor & Chow and closed in September 2019. It is now a centre for young people and for those in need of mental health support (The Cavern). In the last twenty years of trading as a licensed property it had gone through many incarnations: Lamprey Cafe Bar (1998), Therapy Bar (2002), Haus (2003), The Grill (2007), Westgate Bar & Cafe (2008), Westgate ( 2009), Westgate Bar & Lounge (2015), Lamprey (2015) and Liquor & Chow (2017). During the time when it traded as the Westgate it became a popular meeting place for Gloucester's gay community. A drag queen was the general manager. A roof fire in January 2013 caused substantial damage and trade never picked up after it reopened. EI (Enterprise Inns) sold the building to a local property developer in 2017 and the upper floors were leased by Treasure Seekers - a young persons charity. Liquor & Chow was another short lived venture. An earlier attempt to transform the pub back to the Lamprey was also unsuccessful as the stated aim was to create a 'back-street-boozer-meets-gastropub' - an impossible combination.
