This Pub is Permanently Closed
This was once a part of the large local estate of the Shrewsbury & Wem Brewery. It was also an entry in the four early years of the Good Beer Guide from 1976.
When Wem had a livestock market, this was where the place where the farmers used to stay. Older Wemians have fond memories of this place in its heyday. It closed many years ago and this grade two listed building is in a state of advanced decrepitude. There is reportedly a tree growing from the cellar into the bar! It was bought by Shropshire Council in 2024 and discussions are ongoing about its future. Suggestions include it becoming a public library / community space with "affordable" accommodation upstairs. Reopening as a pub seems not to be an option.
