18th Century former coaching inn renovated and modernised by Wetherspoon in 2011, it was their 800th pub. Low ceilings and dark wood panelling characterise the pub which has a number of drinking and eating areas. There are booth-like areas down one side and the slightly spooky presence of a large Unicorn (its horn absent!) in Elizabethan costume as homage to Lewis Carroll's links with Ripon. Local interest pictures adorn the walls with Ripon Cathedral, Fountains Abbey and Lewis Carroll being prominent. The bar is at the back of the pub with eight real ales, and there is a beer garden and smoking area outside. A Wetherspoon hotel, it has 32 letting rooms.
