This Pub is Permanently Closed

Now Zizzi pizza restaurant, this was formerly a famous music pub in the 1960s and 70s.

A plaque on the outside of the premises records: "David Bowie Rock Musician Lived in Beckenham & Launched His Career in The Three Tuns 1969 - 1973".

The main picture is shown here with the kind permission of the Bromley Borough local History Society. More can be seen at their website.

Historic Interest

Originally dating from the 18th C as a coaching inn, this was later owned by the local landowning Burrell family until sold in 1820. An assembly room was added in the 1820s. This public house was rebuilt in 1902 with half timbered mock Tudor frontage in a style nicknamed "Brewers Tudor". Popular as a music venue in the 1960s, this was frequented by David Bowie who co-founded a folk club, later becoming the Beckenham Arts Lab before being renamed as the Folk Club. The pub was renamed as a "Rat & Parrot" in the 1995, but returned to its original name by 2000 before it closed in 2003. The commemorative plaque to Bowie was restored in 2010, having been removed in 2003 following the pub's closure.
