Stroud Rugby Club, Stroud

Stroud Rugby Football Club was established in October 1873 following earlier failed attempts to form a club in 1871 and 1872. Early matches were played at Stratford Court, later moving to Farmhill and then, from 1884/85, to the club’s current long-term home at Fromehall Park.

In the early years, facilities were extremely basic, with players changing at local pubs including The Ship Inn at Wallbridge and later The Bell Hotel, reflecting the close historic link between the club and Stroud’s public houses. The club also played a key role in the formation of the Gloucestershire County Rugby Football Union in 1878.

Fromehall Park was originally rented and later threatened with sale in 1931–32, prompting a major local fundraising effort which secured the freehold and ensured the club’s survival. Post-war development in the early 1950s saw major volunteer-led improvements to the pitch and the construction of new changing and stand facilities, followed by clubhouse expansion completed in 1963 with financial support from West Country Breweries.

The clubhouse has since become an important social venue for the town, hosting players, supporters, touring sides and notable rugby figures. The club has a long tradition of competitive fixtures against leading English and Welsh clubs and has produced numerous county and international players.
