This Pub is Closed Long Term

Beautiful village pub, dating from the 17th Century, situated in the village of Stathern surrounded by the Belvoir Hills. Very highly rated and popular food pub, using locally sourced ingrediants where possible, including fruit, veg and herbs from it's own kitchen garden. Recent beer and food matching evenings have proved popular. As well as the Red Lion Ale from Grainstore, beers from Brewsters Brewery, which originated in the village, often feature. One of two excellent pubs in Stathern.

Historic Interest

Following a nomination by a local unincorporated group, the Red Lion was registered as an Asset of Community Value by Melton Borough Council on the 20 March 2017. However, on the same date Melton Borough Council rejected the car park as being a valid part of the nomination and rejected its inclusion. This decision to exclude the car park was overtuned by the Council's ACV Review Panel and the car park was registered as an Asset of Community Value on the 30 November 2017. Then in a bizarre twist following a request for a review by the owner, the Council's Communities Committee overturned the ACV on the car park on 23 January 2018. The committee papers for that meeting may be read at: https://democracy.melton.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=142&MId=797&Ver=4

Asset of Community Value

Active Campaign

The pub closed in 2017, but the owner offered it for sale. Some residents formed the Stathern Community Benefit Society to help ensure that this Asset of Community Value re-opens as a viable business for the benefit of the local community and visitors. The group set up a Community Benefit Society, and launched a community share scheme, and the launch meeting was attended by over 80 people. They commissioned a Business Buyer and Market Appraisal Valuation Report. In late 2023 a planning application for change of use was submitted which the society opposed. In early 2024 Stathern Parish Council renewed the ACV registration.

However the owner then took the pub off the market and the planned purchase attempt has been abandoned, but the society is still campaigning to oppose planning applications for change of use.

For updates see the society website and also a Facebook page.
