This Pub is Closed Long Term
The Railway is the sort of pub, the like of which is not often encountered these days. This may be because the family, having purchased it in 1936, have been happy to retain much of its original character, albeit with minor alterations. There are no pretensions and just two rooms. The public bar is small with quarry tiles, settles and the mandatory fire, whilst some would regard the larger lounge to be more of an old fashioned parlour. (Note 'Pinkie', the 40lb carp on the wall, caught locally at Fenemere in 1992.) The result is a gentle and comforting oasis, typifying the simple rural pub as it used to be. Even the tables outside continue the simplicity theme. It's worth noting though that the simple rural pub had outside toilets - the Railway was, and is, no exception!
What may be surprising for a country pub, is that there's a railway station within 200 metres or so. However, travellers have to be aware that it is a "request stop". Also, the platform is quite low, although there are some steps provided to ease the landing process!! Note: opening hours can be variable, so best ring to check. Once a Good Beer Guide institution, in all the editions between 1995 & 2009.
