The pub takes its name from the local district, that in turn acquired it from Mr Johann Farwig (a member of a significant metal-working firm established in Newington Causeway) who purchased the land in the late eighteenth century. This street corner-sited Victorian pub originally had a carriage pull-in to the left side of the building, which was later filled in as a sweet shop and in the 1960’s became incorporated into the pub footprint. It had separate bars; a narrow public bar and a large saloon bar. The pub used a single handpump to dispense one or other of the two regular beers. Nicknamed the "Earwig" by the locals.
