Micropub opened in 2016 on the ground floor of a building in a conservation area previously used as offices. There is a single light airy room with a bar opposite as you enter. Behind the counter, through a glass partition, a cellar may be viewed. Board games and reading material may be found on shelves, and there are displays of old maps of Leicester around the walls. Guest beers are sourced from microbreweries around the country and include many rare beers. A full range of Samuel Smith's bottled beers is also available. Oversize glasses ensure customers get a full pint. No meals, but local pork pies and well-filled cheese or ham cobs are sold. On the last Sunday of the month opens later for music.
Match days for either Leicester City or Leicester Tigers can be very busy.
The house beer, a red ale, is brewed by Bang The Elephant brewery in Langley Mill, Derbyshire. The beer is now badged as "New Boar" and at 4.4% ABV is a slight variation to the original Blue Boar Bitter. This is a unique brew and can only be sampled in the Blue Boar and in their sister pub, the Rock Cafe & Bar, Coalville.
Historic Interest
The pub is named in honour of the Blue Boar Inn where Richard III stayed before the Battle of Bosworth Field.
The original Blue Boar Inn was located on Leicester's medieval High Street (now Highcross Street), close to where a Travelodge stands today. This was once an elaborate timber-framed building where by tradition, Richard III spent a final night or two before the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. It was one of Leicester’s finest medieval coaching inns but the last remaining part of the building was demolished in 1836.
Our knowledge of the inn comes mostly from a number of 18th- and 19th-century engravings, the best-known of which were made by the noted local artist John Flower. Shortly before the Blue Boar was demolished, a Leicester architect, Henry Goddard, also made a detailed record of the building, with meticulous drawings including the roof structure, timber joints and mouldings, all carefully annotated with measurements.
