Newport Inn, Braishfield

The Landlady, Janet Cook died on 6th October 2013. The pub has been closed since except for holding her wake, and won't reopen without major changes. This was the description: Two-bar former Gale's pub, found down a narrow lane, run by the same family since 1941. The reputation of the Newport travels far and wide, those looking for a modern pub need not visit, indeed, the décor, inside and out, has changed little since the 1970s. Ham or cheese sandwiches or ploughman's are the only food available, but their quality and value are legendary. Traditional singalongs round the piano are held on Saturday evenings and local folk musicians often play on Thursday evenings. Darts and other traditional pub games such as dominoes and cribbage are played in the public bar.
