Drayton Gate, Wem

This is the closest pub to Wem Station. Following a number of years of regular-changing landlords, and a major refurbishment. it re-opened as a free house at the end of May 2014, The new family team of four bring a wealth of experience, which has helped to re-ignite this place into the venue it once was. The name was changed to the Drayton Gate in 2014 to reflect a civil war skirmish nearby, when the women of Wem saw off the advancing Royalist forces. History doesn't say how they did it, but there is a 1643 quote on a wall tablet in the restaurant "The women of Wem and a few musketeers beat Lord Capel and all his cavaliers" Although the focus is very much on food, there is a comfortable bar, but no real ale is served. Overall, the feel is very much modern and tasteful. In addition to the bar, the conservatory is a bright dining area overlooking the garden, whilst the adjoining barn room has been converted into a smart restaurant. Also, a small room is available as a more private dining area, or a meeting place for very small groups. The pub is closed from Monday to Wednesday inclusive, but is available for hire for groups of 15 and over on those days. As the Albion it was a part of the large local estate of the Shrewsbury & Wem Brewery, which used to be very close indeed!
