Charrington pub dating back to 1871. The building was faced with knapped flints, and a stream called the Blackwater ran beneath the cellars. It was acquired by Charrington & Co in 1937. The inn sign carried the Coat of Arms of the pre-1965 borough of Sutton & Cheam.
(From "Inns, Taverns & Pubs of the London Borough of Sutton", by A J Crowe, published 1980 by the London Borough of Sutton Libraries & Arts Services).
