This Pub is Closed Long Term
This historic village pub, which dates back to the 1860's and was very popular, not only with locals but also with several famous visitors such as the poet Dylan Thomas, actor Anthony Hopkins, writer Kingsley Amis and politician Lord Michael Heseltine, during its time as a pub on the famous 'Mumbles Mile'.
It closed suddenly in 2006 and although it reopened for a brief time, it closed again in 2012 and has remained so ever since and has unfortunately become very dilapidated!
There were plans announced in 2017 to create a wine bar, restaurant, coffee shop and tea room. It had been undergoing a major but very slow and prolonged refurbishment which has appeared to include demolishing a substantial part of the two story building. But no work has been undertaken for a long while.
In March 2023, after reporting action by the local Mumbles councillors concerned about the poor state of the building, which has become an eyesore in an often busy part of Mumbles. Swansea City Council have contacted the owners of the building, who has given the timeframe of 'by August, 2023' for work to start. If not, the council have confirmed they will then consider serving an S215 enforcement notice, which means the owners will have to improve the building.
In January 2024, the building had been placed up for sale but no further information has been announced and the sale seems to have ceased!
Three planning applications were submitted to Swansea City Council in 2015-2017 and approved. This was the latest and was approved on Tue 14 Nov 2017:
2017/1133/FUL | Single storey side extension with creation of servery and washing area and provision of roof terrace above at 1st floor level, 2nd floor balcony, fenestration alterations, additional windows and doors to facilitate redevelopment of former public house (Amendment to Planning Permission 2015/0839 granted 13 July 2015) | Antelope Hotel 628 Mumbles Road Mumbles Swansea SA3 4EA
