A public house since the 16th century and at one time a coaching inn it has a busy front bar and a small and cosy back room, said to be haunted by the ghost of a former landlord. Bought in 1759 by Richard Tawney, the forerunner of Morrell’s, this was his, and hence Morrell’s first pub. The pub is now owned by Greene King. There is a large garden to the rear. The hand pumps for the cask ales are in the back bar and not visible from the larger front bar. The pub sign has featured a number of different monarchs over the years but has now been dispensed with as Greene King often seem to.
