J D Wetherspoon reopened the pub in March 2011. Tastefully renovated and opened out into a large room with fine panelling and a magnificent grand staircase. A spacious extension has been added at the rear. A delightful large garden at the back.

Historic Interest

A large house with an interesting history. It was built in the late 1920s from stone salvaged from the 17th century Normanton Hall, in Rutland, which had fallen into disrepair and been demolished. The work was commissioned by Tom Crumbie, a businessman and secretary of Leicester Tigers rugby club, who apparently wanted somewhere to entertain executives from opposing clubs. It is said that Crumbie bought the land before moving the building brick-by-brick. In 1932, after Crumbie's death, it was bought by a county seed merchant who laid out the gardens, an orchard and a paddock. In 1950, it was sold to the Northampton Brewery for £14,500 and opened as a pub two years later. Later owned by Scottish & Newcastle, it reopened by J D Wetherspoon in March 2011.
