Burnhill Road, Beckenham, BR3 3LA (View on Google Map)

A friendly and traditional back street local convenient for the High Street , and now operated by Town Bar and Sports. The pub was undergoing a major refurbishment in 2020 as the Covid-19 crisis struck, and reopened in August when the work was completed, complete with new exterior signage.

There is a large patio at the front with pub with several benches and tables, which have been renovated as part of the refurbishment. The exterior work is also evident in the rear, with a prominent mural of the London skyline on display in the back garden. Internally there are new light fittings, wooden floorings, and new tiling behind the bar. In short, not much has been left unchanged.

Well worth a visit if you are in the vicinity of Beckenham High Street. All the photography on this page is after the 2020 refurbishment.

Historic Interest

Dating from the 18th C, this was established sometime in the 1850s as a beer-house and frequented by domestic staff and servants working at nearby private homes and estates, including the former Kelsey Manor. Located on Burnhill Road, which once formed part of an old country track called Love Lane leading to Wickham Road, and near to the former Fair Field which was home to the annual fair until the 1850s and used for playing cricket until workers cottages were built over in the 1870s. The beer-house later became a Courage tied pub and had a extended frontage which was removed sometime in the 1970s, increasing the size of the front patio area. Grade II listed in 1973 by Historic England: "C18. 2 storeys with dormers. Pebble-dash. Slate mansard roof. 3 windows. 1 with glazing bars intact. 2 dormers. Modern extension conceals ground floor front."
