This large hotel was set back off the main road, and sold a number of real ales, including those from fledgling microbreweries, and even appeared in the 1985 Good Beer Guide. One regular beer from the time was Martlet Brewery's Regency Bitter. The cellar was on the ground floor and this could lead to beer quality issues in hot weather. The Wonham was also known for its very good food at this time. After the landlord left to take over the Haycutter at Broadham Green, unfortunate changes led to it stopping real ale in the late 1980s and it closed around 1990. However, while open, it did a great service to real ale drinkers.
