Pub with a restaurant area
Pub & Kitchen in the centre of the town, near Wollaton Park and several residential areas. The front part caters specifically to diners while other areas of the pub are equally comfortable to both drinkers and those looking to eat. A lower ceiling behind the bar that extends to the counter adds a feeling of intimacy while tasteful decorations give a feeling of luxury throughout. Casks from local breweries, while snacks, cakes, teas and coffee and a wide range of gins are available
Historic Interest
Originally the Willoughby Arms, the Wollaton was designed by Architects W.B.Starr and Clifford for Shipstones. The pub was built in 1954-6 and opened in August 1956. The plans show a lower range visible from Wollaton Road which was the assembly room and/or lounge with a case store to the left where the kitchen is now. The two-storey range facing Lambourne Drive has lavatories on the right, with a smoke room with bay windows to the left and a large public bar beyond that, with lavatories at the end as they are now. The plans dated January 1954 show lawns to the front and a plan of February 1954 added as a revision shows another lawn with a shelter replacing cottages to the rear. There is also a large car park with "in" and "out" entrances. There was a large basement cellar and heating chamber. Upstairs is a four bed flat with a little South-facing balcony to two of the bedrooms, suggesting one bedroom was for a lodger, guest or staff. The revised plans were granted permission in March 1954. There was also a February 1963 plan for a skittle alley behind the public bar. There is an extension on this spot, now with a feature fireplace, rather shorter than the skittle alley shown. The assembly room / lounge is now a restaurant, much extended and with a high open roof and the lavatories at this end are another eating area. The smoke room and public bar are recognisable but there is a new and larger bar connecting these spaces (Elain Harwood / Historic England).
