Historic Interest

Formerly listed as a Family & Commercial Inn & Posting House A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 24 Apr in 1811 states that : "White Hart Inn, Newmarket, for sale, consisting of 5 parlours, a dining room 20 feet by 17 feet, an assembly room 36 feet by 16 feet, a billiard room adjoining; 12 excellent sleeping rooms, 11 servants ditto, laundry, tap room, kitchen, larder, bar, waiter's closets, ostlery, boot house etc; a most extensive cellarage & wine vaults, stabling for upwards of 60 horses with corn, hay & straw chambers, coach house, piggery & every possible convenience (No landlord noted)" A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 20 May in 1812 states that "White Hart Inn, Newmarket, to be let...from which the present proprietor & occupier retires with a sufficiency - Enquire Mr WEATHERBY, Newmarket." A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 12 Sep in 1821 states : "To be Let, The White Hart Inn, Newmarket. The tenant will be entirely free from Brewer or Merchant. Apply to Mrs GOLDING, Newmarket." In 1830 Pigots directory The Telegraph coach (from Norwich to London) is reported as calling here daily at half past 12 & the Magnet (from Norwich to London) calls daily at quarter past 10 in the eve. The returning Telegraph (from London to Norwich) calls at 2 in afternoon whilst the Magnet (from London to Norwich) calls at 2 in morning. Also the Regulator & the Fakenham Hero coaches (both from Fakenham to London) & the same returning coaches call alternately every afternoon (or to Bottom's Office). A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 11 Oct in 1859 states that "Charles BOTTOM, has added a 1 & 2 Hearse & Coach at the White Hart Inn Funeral Establishment, Newmarket" A report in the Bury & Norfolk Post & Suffolk Herald** on 07 Aug in 1883 states that : Newmarket: On 01 July 1883, Mr LAYTON relinquished his tenancy of the White Hart Hotel, which reverts to Mr CHENNELL, the proprietor of the White Hart Brewery, who will retain the management in his own hands.
