Historic Interest
The Ethell family were owners of the pub and brewing on the premises c1890-1910. In 2022 Frederick Keens recorded his reminiscences of the pub _ "I was evacuated from Kent to the Wharf Inn, Shebdon in 1940. Its position on the Shropshire Union Canal made it a convenient stop for narrow boat workers who were welcomed by the landlord, his wife and two comely daughters. At the time, the landlord also ran a small holding with horses and cows. At the age of 8 I did not observe what brand of ale they were selling, but it always seemed to be a jolly place with plenty of customers. It is sad, but inevitable, that it is closed but I have fond memories of the pub and its staff who looked after me as if I were their own."
