Perched high above Matlock Town this superb two-roomed traditional pub enjoys beautiful views of the Derwent valley and Riber Castle from the heated patio area. Popular with workers from County Hall at lunchtimes and locals at night, children and dogs are welcome although cat-swinging is not recommended due to the compact nature of the establishment. Reputedly, a haunted wall clock has a transcendental approach to time in the lounge where regulars, ramblers and real ale enthusiasts convene to enjoy the atmosphere. Two permanent real ales are complemented by four ever changing guests. Food is served Thursday to Saturday from noon. Pie night every Thursday evening 6pm until 8pm. Sunday roast dinner served noon to 3pm. Book tables on 01629 580295

One star - A pub interior of special national historic interest

Listed status: Not listed

Situated high above the town, this late 19th-century stone-built pub retains a traditional layout of entrance passage with off-sales ahead and small bars left and right. The distinctive dado panelling on most of the walls dates from a refit of about 1965 which is also when the servery was brought forward from the cellar steps. Little has changed since. The left-hand room has a chunky 1960s bar counter, fixed seating of the same era or a little earlier and a bar back of mixed vintage. In the other bar, the sloping counter and bar-back fittings are from the 1965 refurb but the tiled fireplace is of the 1930s.

General information about historic pub interiors

Late 19th-century stone built pub situated high above the town and still retaining a traditionally layout of entrance passage leading to an off sales and small bars to left and right. The walls throughout have a distinctive dado of what looks like wood which was added as part of a refit in c.1965, when the servery was brought forward from cellar steps, and the pub has barely changed since. On the left a sliding door leads to a very small room with a chunky wooden bar counter which looks like 60s work, the fixed seating is at least 50/60s but it has lost a fireplace. One section of bar back looks 60s work, the other more modern. The bar on the right has a sloping counter installed in c.1965 and the bar back fitting with its small glass pieces does look very 60s. This room has a 1930s tiled fireplace and a good ceiling rose. Outside gents’.
