3 bedroom hotel.
The Taversoe is run virtually single handedly by Carey Maguire, and is a little gem on Rousay and as of the beginning of June 2013 now has a Highland handpump which is trialling all of Robs excellent beers. It also boasts a selection of bottled beers from both swannay and Orkney Breweries. Check Winter / Summer opening times which start at the beginning of May. You do have the option of "room temperature" or from the fridge. There is an enticing selection of home cooked food including Orkney beef and locally caught seafood at a very reasonable price. The stunning view from the dining area is worth the trip in itself.
The Taverose currently has three bedrooms available, 2 with magnificent sea views and if you crave a "get away from it all" holiday or mini break, then this is a strong contender. It is not so remote as not to have WiFi or the internet, unless you leave them at home! Although you will NOT get free beer for life, if you visit The Taversoe just say "WhatPub? sent you".
Whilst you can take your car on "MV Eynhallow" from Tingwall, for those staying at The Taversoe, Carey offers a "meet and greet" from the ferry for foot passengers, otherwise it is a 2 mile walk westwards (clockwise). Of course, if you can not tell your west from east, then it is 11.1 miles! For the past few years Rousay has had a "mini marathon". The 13.1 mile perimeter road means that it has been lapped (clockwise) in 47 minutes by (push) bike, 1 hour 57 minutes running, or (amazingly) a 2 hour 5 minute walk. Rousay has a lot to offer, dubbed "The Egypt of the North" with more than 160 archaeological sites. Take advantage of the community transport on Thursday - phone the day before to book it - and get dropped off at the parking place for Midhowe Broch and Cairn which itself commands stunning views over the sea to Eynhallow and the Orkney "mainland" beyond. Walk down the hill to Cairn and Broch and take in the Heritage walk. Look out for the seals, or "silkies", on the rocks. Then on another 2 miles to The Taversoe where a warm welcome awaits.
Winter hours may vary - best phone ahead to check.
