Restaurant and Accommodation.

The Taigh Ailean Hotel recently changed hands (September 2014) and the new owners, Johnny and Katie Heron, are determined to have a great time providing a great venue!

"Taigh Ailean" is Gaelic for Alan’s House and was built about 100 years ago in the "new" village of Portnalong (from Old Norse meaning Port of Boats) was settled after the First World War when families from the neighbouring Isles of Lewis & Harris moved there.

Currently the pub opens in the evening and has two hand pumps, one on all year round offering Gillean a "house blend" (or occasionally the IPA) from Isle of Skye Brewery. "A light malty-flavoured session beer (4.1% abv) with a slight bitter background which lingers. Named after Sgurr nan Gillean in the Cuillin hills and considered by many as one of the finest Cuillin peaks.

The second hand pump offers Eagle from Cuillin Brewery during the summer months.

The lounge bar is open from 6 to 11 every day, and a range of home cooked food made from local ingredients is available in the bar and restaurant, with a "take away" service from the bar until 9.

Given the location, expect fresh oysters, scallops and "prawns" (langoustines) to be on the menu. Lobster or something not on the menu takes your fancy? Usually no problem, just let them know with one or two days notice. Food at other times, lunchtimes etc, can be arranged (even when not normally open) with a few days' notice, but do ask.

During the winter months (November-March) roast Sunday lunch is served from 1 to 3 on a first come, first served basis - when its gone its gone!

Please note during the winter, pub closed to non residents Monday to Wednesday. Access is via a flight of steps to the door of the Munros bar door, then further steps up to the bar area itself, so access for the infirm / wheelchair may be a problem. However in fine weather there are trestle tables outside so you can enjoy the view.

Irrespective of the times shown, PLEASE phone ahead to make sure Taigh Ailean will be open when you arrive.

Please note, the images on this page have been supplied by Katie Heron of Taigh Ailean Hotel who has given permission for them to be used by CAMRA but still may be subject to copyright, including the last, "guess the cheese" picture!
