Staplecross Inn, Hockworthy

On the border with Somerset, this attractive building (circa 1600) has been a pub since the early 1700s. It is situated in a small hamlet, a mile from Hockworthy, at a crossroads of ancient trading routes (wool and whisky). There are two stone-walled rooms on either side of the bar, plus a dining room. Two wood-burning stoves are the main source of heating and provide a cosy atmosphere in the winter months. The pub has a strong local following and serves a wide range of good quality home-made food.
