This Pub is Permanently Closed

Former Courage pub that became a Greene King Hungry Horse. It got its name from the number of mills in the area of the River Wandle which served the skinning and leather tanning industry. It was once a familiar stopping place for convicts on their journey to Southampton before being deported to Australia! Conservatory with additional seating at rear. Planning application C2004/53307 requesting redevelopment of the site for housing was approved on 27 January 2005.

This pub may have been the inspiration for the one of the same name often mentioned in the scripts of Steptoe and Son. Alan Simpson, who wrote the scripts with Ray Galton, lived in Mitcham and attended Mitcham County Grammar School.
