17th century classic Brakspear country pub hidden in trees off the Highmoor to Stoke Row road. A small flagstone-floored bar on entering, with a large inglenook fireplace, opens into a cosy snug bar to the right, also with a real fire, and into a larger dining area at the rear. A warm, family friendly welcome awaits in this lovely village pub. A rarity in this area, the pub is open all-day, bar Wednesday.
The menu features classic British main dishes with a twist (e.g. fish pie, bangers and mash, fish and chips, chilli beef, steak and chips, mac n cheese), all cooked from fresh using locally sourced high provenance ingredients, and is comforting food served in generous portions. There are specials nights, such as pie night on Mondays and steak nights on Thursday. Special prices for the 60+ "vintage menu" are also offered Mon - Fri lunchtimes.
The landlady has two young rescue dogs, Floyd and Ada, that entertain customers and the pub is very dog-friendly.
Note that the pub closes at dusk on Sunday evenings.
