Ember Inn
A smart, spacious and comfortable pub restaurant owned by Ember Inns. There is usually an interesting and varied real ale selection, including seasonal beers. There are plenty of tables and a garden.
Even though this pub is food-orientated, casual drinkers are welcome. Like most Ember Inns, a "Cask Club" operates every Monday and Thursday whereby there is a £1/pint discount. The 20p/pint discount for CAMRA members operates on all other days.
In addition to the buses listed, the high frequency 358 route from Beckenham and Bromley passes within 15 minutes walk of the pub.
Previously a Big Steak restaurant in 1994 (owned by Allied Domecq, then Punch in 1999), this was then owned by Ember Inns in 2000 with major structural changes made to the outside and a complete overhaul inside.
Historic Interest
First recorded in 1769, this was a purpose built inn with facilities for changing horses as well as stables and situated on the London to Hastings & Rye coach road (on the corner with World's End Lane, which was originally a track leading to Chelsfield). Back in the 18th C, the slopes to the east of the inn were used for growing hops. The inn had its name by 1807 and was rebuilt in 1899 when owned by Nalder & Collyer's Brewery and serving their range of ales. The inn was also a popular stop for visitors from the 1880s, when excursions to the surrounding countryside became fashionable. This trend increased into the early 20th C with the growing popularity of cycling (the inn also served as tea rooms). In the late 1930s, the footpath across the fields to Chelsfield station was absorbed into the growing housing development of what was to be called "New Chelsfield". In the past, the inn sign has portrayed both Queen Mary I ("Bloody Mary") and Queen Victoria at different times.
