This Pub is Permanently Closed
The pub was first recorded in 1687. It was probably rebuilt by the Cartwright family and the initials CWM (for William and Mary Cartwright) appear on the lintel above the front door along with the date 1727. The building was probably built as a pub, being on the strategic packhorse route south of Derby via Swarkestone Causeway. The building next door known today as the 'Ale House' was probably a doss house for the packhorse men.
