This popular split-level Wetherspoon was originally the prison governor's house, later one of the first UK libraries, then an ironmonger's, and finally a classy furniture store. Located in the city centre, it is very convenient for most Winchester buses and the train station. The bus from the southern Park and Ride stops outside. There is a narrow seating area outside the pub, ideal for people watching; but unfortunately drinking is not allowed there after 9.00pm. The layout is good for wheelchair users. The 4 core beers are supplemented by 6 guest beers chosen to include at least one local ale. Real cider is available from polypin. Beer prices are lower than elsewhere in Winchester. The food menu is extensive and cheap so the pub can get busy with shoppers taking a break to eat. CAMRA members can use their Wetherspoon vouchers to get 50p off a pint of real ale.
