This Pub is Permanently Closed
The Nine Elms was situated just outside the town centre and dated from 1843. Little is known about this pub, which was destroyed by fire in 1983. It had closed 10 years earlier and, according to the late local historian Tony Larkin, the building had subsequently been used illegally as a shoe factory. Several lives were lost in the fire.
The Nine Elms had been part of the local Russell's brewery tied estate, passing to London brewers Truman's in 1930 on takeover. After the fire it was demolished and the site is now occupied by residential accommodation.
