Busy community pub featuring a public bar at the rear and a smart, narrow lounge at the front. The former dining room, off the lounge, is currently set out for darts, with 5 dart boards. Indeed, the pub is very popular with pub games enthusiasts, with no fewer than 12 darts teams, an in-house darts league, and 3 dominoes teams! The lawn to the rear is the remnant of a former bowling green.
Historic Interest
A former licensee believed that the pub dates back to ~1786 and was an old coaching inn and toll house, then bought by Bass ~1803 as its first already-operating pub (as opposed to opening a new one). However, there is evidence of its being built in 1809 and offered for sale in 1810. This contradiction can only be resolved if the earlier pub was demolished, but there are no reports of this. Whether or not it was indeed owned by Bass at that time, it certainly was in the late 1800s since records show that Bass sold some associated land in 1892. It remained a Bass pub until the late 1990s when sold to Punch Taverns.
This Pub serves no changing beers and 1 regular beer.
