Historic Interest
Built in the early 1860s as a hotel and public house to serve the expanding suburb of Anerley, with new housing being built on what was once Penge Common. Located adjacent to the entrance to Betts Park (which originally opened in 1928 and contains a short stretch of the abandoned Croydon Canal), this would have been a popular venue for visitors. The pub also overlooked the tram routes from Croydon to both Crystal Palace and Penge (from 1906 to 1933). In 1900 the locality was transferred from Surrey to Kent with the new county border located nearby. The pub later became a tied Courage house.
