Historic Interest

The pub was built around 1840 replacing the old pub of the same name on the opposite side of Ford Road. Listed in Bagshaw's Directory of 1850. Known as the Furness Hotel (the name of a previous licensee) for a time up to at least 1891 and later in the 1890s known as the Upton Hotel. A Yates's Castle Brewery pub, closed 11th December 1963 when the new Horse & Jockey was opened nearby. Demolished and replaced by shops.
