This Pub is Permanently Closed

Former Charrington pub, noted for its mural depicting a Victorian scene with both pub (as the Park Tavern) and Crystal Palace. The mural was painted in 1982 and is still preserved.

Historic Interest

Built as the Park Tavern in the early 1870s, this was intended to serve the local community as well as visitors to nearby Crystal Palace Park with its attractions, its location being adjacent to Penge East station (initially called "Penge Lane", then "Penge" until 1923). The back of the pub looked over former railway sidings serving the coal yard, hence the triangular wedged shaped building. Station Road was originally called Trinity Road, named after the Holy Trinity Mission House that once stood opposite. In 1877, the public house was used for the initial enquiry into the murder of Harriet Staunton in adjacent Mosslea Road. This infamous case resulted in a legal shambles of a trial, which helped in the development of the Court of Appeal (which was founded in 1875). The famous mural was painted in 1982 by the Coal Yard Youth Group and the Orchard Lodge Regional Resource Centre. The pub changed its name to Hollywood East in 2008, the "East" portion being a reference to Penge East station. The pub closed permanently at the beginning of 2015.
