Traditionally constructed former Toll House containing Cotswolds stone walls and with a pitched stone roof.

By winter this a cosy endearing pub and by summer it has a beer garden that soaks up the sun. It hosts a children's play area and a pétanque piste.

The food at the pub is cooked to order, using local suppliers and seasonal produce. It ranges from pub classics to interesting and creative food. The drinks follow the same ethos with ales from local breweries such as Stroud and Uley.

Entering the pub, the room opens out into one long area with the bar in the middle. There is a real fire at each end. with the one nearest the door in regular use, and the other on the coldest nights.

Historic Interest

Grade II Listed (Historic England No. 1302998), first listed in 1987. The present building is a coaching inn dating from about 1800, constructed in coursed Cotswold limestone with a stone-slate roof. The former stables at the north end have been incorporated into the inn, and the building retains a number of notable historic features including its stonework, iron casements, distinctive central porch and 19th-century-style painted lettering proclaiming “FOSTON'S ASH INN”.

The inn stands on the former turnpike road between Stroud and Birdlip/Cheltenham. The name is traditionally associated with Foston, reputedly a local character who avoided paying the toll by riding his horse over an ash-tree tollgate; this incident is depicted on the pub sign. The separate toll house stood opposite the inn, near the parish boundary, and although it no longer survives, its site is recorded by the National Trust. A historic milestone also survives nearby, inscribed “CHELTm 8 STROUD 6”.

The surrounding landscape has further evidence of earlier transport history, including a possible drovers' enclosure associated with the Calf Way. The inn was subsequently associated with Nailsworth Brewery and was featured in Whitbread's 1974 book Inn and Around – 250 Favourite Whitbread Pubs.

The building was refurbished and reopened in December 2023 following a period of closure.
