The Bear Inn or Ale House was in existence certainly before 1500 when the Bearfield existed and was acquired with adjoining fields (labelled Bear Field) as endowment for All Souls College. The White Bear was built in 1932 by the Cannon Brewery to designs by the architectural firm Bradford and Sons. In the late 19th century William Bradford became the brewers’ architect, and he was responsible for building or altering over 70 brewery properties. The pub changed hands several times becoming 'Fernando's Chicken Grill & Bar' in Spring 2008 claiming to be Britain's first Kosher pub. This closed in 2010 and the pub had been derelict due to the refusal of various planning applications.
