Historic Interest
A report in the Bury & Norwich Post** on Oct-09 in 1894 states that : "An application was made to the West Suffolk Licensing Committee for a full licence for the Cherry Tree beerhouse, Exning. The house had been built two years & was well adapted for the purpose for which it was desired to be utilised. The owner of the house is Mr Armstrong, Cambridge." There may be some connection with a Cherry Tree recorded earlier in Exning (this part of Newmarket used to be in Exning parish). It isn't the same building, as old OS maps make it clear that the current Cherry Tree didn't exist when the other Cherry Tree was recorded, but it may have been a relocation. Photographs of this pub and more historical information about it can be found at suffolk.camra.org.uk/pub/756
