This is a country pub with a difference. It is situated just off the main road from Macclesfield to Congleton, in an area where local custom is sparse. A recent addition is an extensive function room, The Gate Hall, suitable for wedding receptions, christenings etc, for which outside catering is supplied. The pub is popular for sport, having football, darts and domino teams, so the lounge may be occupied by dominoes players, whilst there is a smaller room for pool and darts players. There is a likelihood that any major sport event will be showing on the T V in the lounge. Turnover supports one real ale, though a second may be available if a large function is booked.
The name Chain & Gate replaces an earlier Cheyney Gate, which is visible on a window above the entrance.
Cheyney Gate may in itself be a corruption of China Gate, a reference to the pub being a coaching inn on the route to and from the Potteries.
Note that no food is served, and closing time may vary dependent on custom! Access by bus (Macclesfield-Congleton-Crewe) is available hourly up to 11pm.
This Pub serves no changing beers and 1 regular beer.
