This 4* hotel was built as a private house and hunting lodge early in the 1800s and converted to its current use around 1850. Bar food is served all day, and jazz accompanies Sunday lunchtimes. There are 54 en-suite rooms, and many recreational and relaxational facilities. During World War I the hotel served as part of the New Zealand General Hospital, and during World War II as an Army Staff College. The graves of 93 ANZAC soldiers lie in the parish church's New Zealand Cemetery.
New to the hotel & bar in 2017 was the Brockenhurst Brewery. Based in the grounds of the hotel, their 'Smokin Deer Bitter' was available at the bar but production ceased in 2019. Update: August 2023 - the brewery is brewing again with Smokin' Deer available at the bar.
