Speech House Hotel, Speech House

Originally built in 1676 as a hunting lodge for King Charles II, the Speech House is an imposing building located in the centre of the Forest of Dean. It became a hotel in 1858. The Speech House is still the meeting place for the Verderer's Court, set up by King Canute in the 11th century and appointed by the crown as administrators of the Forest of Dean. The main restaurant is in the court room, resplendent with large oil paintings and dominated by four oak throne chairs of which were stolen in 2005 only to be discovered for sale at auction some six years later. They were identified by the unique family crest of the makers. Food is also served in an attractive orangery, constructed in 2009. The extensive grounds surrounding the Speech House are used for various activities throughout the year including a vintage transport meet, a food and drink festival and the annual fireworks display in November.
