This Pub is Permanently Closed

Closed in 1908, now a private house. In the 1820s there was an ongoing dispute between the licensee William Bradbury and Thomas Madeley the licensee of the nearby Travellers Rest public house over an area of land between the two pubs. In 1826 William Bradbury's mother & daughter were charged with assaulting Thomas Madeley and his son with a gun and pitchfork. Three years later Thomas Madeley encouraged a drunken mob to tear down the Red Lion. Almost inevitably at one stage the Red Lion was known as the Romping Cat.

Known licensees-

1826, 1829, 1834, 1849 & 1851 William Bradbury; 1860 George Bradbury; 1861 Eliza Bradbury; 1868 & 1872 William Barrett; 1880 Alfred Toy; 1881 Charles Brett; 1896 Mrs Ann Laws; 1900 Richard Simms; 1901 Hezekiah Fowell
