Historic Interest

The address of the Dock Hotel is given at different times as Canning Street, Shore Road and Freeman Street. As these streets intersect at about the same point it is assumed that there was only one pub. Listed in Bagshaw's Directory in 1850. An Argyle Brewery leased pub from 1864, assumed transfer to Birkenhead Brewery in 1866. A full license from 1881, known in 1890s as Frith's Dock Hotel, Yates's Castle Brewery, a pub serving John Smiths beers until at least the early 1980s.
