This Pub is Permanently Closed

Accredited for beer quality 2022.

Closed in June 2024. Has been sold to a local garage and car dealership. Furniture and bar fittings have been removed. A large gate has been erected at the entrance to the car park which is now being used to store motor vehicles.

The Fox was once a part of the large local estate of the Shrewsbury & Wem brewery. Situated on the edge of town in an area once known as Ireland (reputedly because for a time the area was home to a predominantly Irish community). Basically a two roomed setup, it has a public bar and a separate room used as a drinking/dining area. But there's also a rather obscure little space which one could almost call a snug. It is usually fairly quiet. Sport is shown on a TV in the bar. The unusually high bar counter is the result of a previous refurbishment. The counter was moved back a few feet to create more drinking space as planned, but the presence of a large concrete block covering the cellar meant it had to be raised to sit on the top. The beer range is either Doom Bar or Bombardier alongside a guest beer which is usually from Ludlow Brewery, though occasionally, the offering may be from further afield.

Historic Interest

When this was a Wem Brewery outlet in the 1980's, it was managed by Gordon "Jockey" Richards, who claimed to offer "the best mild in Wem" (true), and whose father used to run the now closed Wem Ales Blacksmiths Arms at nearby Loppington - great days. Greenalls' asset-stripping attitude was greatly to be condemned, in stark contrast to that of the management at the old Wrekin Brewery in Wellington, also a victim in 1969.
